Look, as a fan of this fine band, one can't really complain about receiving five new recordings for free, and in a lossless format to boot. The chief virtue of Golden Opportunitues 2, though, is the way it continues to forward the Wilco-like advancement of Okkervil as the ultimate American melancholy bar band. These covers of obscurities from Bill Fay and Ted Lucas, plus a rather dour "Dry Bones," are so dense with smoke you can almost feel the ambience of the dive in which you might imagine the band playing, as nearly unrecognizable here as they were backing Roky Erickson last year. Will Sheff's never sounded so muted, for one thing. The best description for this session, really, is "drunk." Whether that's a compliment or a complaint will largely depend on how fond you are of the band in general, and little to do with how you felt about their fine I Am Very Far, the much more traditional LP from earlier this year. A depressive state will undoubtedly help.
